VIDEO: Pepper spray disperses inside McDonald’s “Everything started burning, your eyes, your nose, your mouth. And then we couldn’t breathe,” customer Lorna Peterson said. WISN 12 News reporter Kent Wainscott said that employees and patrons of a McDonald’s restaurant were evacuated Wednesday afternoon after what police believe was pepper spray was discharged inside the building. Within an hour, workers were allowed back into the restaurant, but the health department remained at the scene, trying to determine exactly what was released into the air. Fire officials are convinced it was pepper spray that spread through the vents. “When these ventilation systems in these restaurants are moving a lot of air, that pepper spray will move very quickly, and it will affect a lot of people. It’s very strong, very concentrated,” Milwaukee Fire Department Battalion Chief Richard Kaiser said. Authorities said they believe the discharge may have been accidental. Witnesses told police a man, who was present when the canister went off, exclaimed, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” and then ran from the building.
