Several have said they run their own businesses and can’t afford to miss work for that long. Others have said they are the primary caregivers for their children, have pre-paid vacations scheduled, or have business trips planned. One man told the judge he runs a delicatessen with his wife, who is 5 1/2 months pregnant. But the Holmes case is even more challenging, as evidenced by the far greater number of jurors Samour called. The 9,000 jurors summoned more than have ever been summoned for a court case in American history, according to experts represent nearly one out of every 50 residents of suburban Arapahoe County. So many notices went out that witnesses to the attack received them, as did relatives of staffers in the local district attorney’s office. They were immediately dismissed. The number’s already been whittled to 7,000 because many summonses were undeliverable.

Panic Attack, Bad Back: Theater Shooting Brings Jury Excuses – Yahoo News

Another worried his orthodontics business would suffer. Still another needed to find daycare. The financial strain will be difficult. Some businesses pay for more than the three days of service required by Colorado law, but many don’t. That limits jury service to those who won’t suffer serious financial hardship — retirees, government employees, those who work for large corporations — which can alter the panel, said Joseph Rice, managing partner of the Jury Research Institute, a California-based trial consulting firm. “All of a sudden, you’ve taken a jury of your peers, which is supposed to be a random cross-section of the community, and now it has become dramatically skewed,” he said.

As thousands of jurors arrive at the courthouse for questioning, both sides in the mass murder trial are worried that some potential jurors are saying whatever they can to avoid serving. Prosecutors have asked the judge not to reveal why he releases jurors, for fear of handing out a road map for others trying to avoid being on the case. And defense attorney Daniel King warned the judge who was listing off the reasons to let people go: You have to consider the fact that people may not want to sit on this jury. It wont be easy for those picked. Jury selection could last until June, and the trial could run into October. The court will pay jurors just $50 a day during that time, and Colorado employers only have to pay their workers for the first three days of jury service. The chosen 24, including 12 alternates, wont be allowed to talk to anyone – even each other – about the case until deliberations start, which means bearing the stressful experience alone.

The number has already been whittled to 7,000 because many summonses were undeliverable. Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr. had dismissed 384 potential jurors by the end of the day Monday. Most of the reasons weren’t made public, but a few people had doctors’ notes, couldn’t speak English, weren’t residents of Arapahoe County or had pressing family responsibilities.

Moody Helps Iowa State Upend No. 8 Texas 58-57 – Yahoo Sports

The lead changed hands four times during the final six minutes. View gallery Texas guard Brianna Taylor, left, puts up a shot against Iowa State center Bryanna Fernstrom, right, Texas committed nine turnovers in the second half, including one by Brianna Taylor that gave Iowa State the possession on which Moody created the decisive lead change. But the Longhorns’ biggest problem might have been a penchant for fouling. Texas committed 15 fouls in the second half. Iowa State was in the bonus shooting free throws with 12:21 remaining. The Cyclones converted 11 of 16 free throws in the half, sub-par for a team that leads the nation in accuracy but sufficient against Texas. ”We were trying to attack,” Moody said.

Ukraine rebel offensive marks dangerous new stage in conflict – Yahoo News

A deadly rocket attack on the port city of Mariupol on Saturday highlighted a week-long rebel advance that has seen the separatists take the long-disputed Donetsk airport and pledge to conquer more territory. Rebels did not claim responsibility for the Grad and Uragan rockets that killed 30 people, but monitors from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe said they were fired from the direction of separatist-held areas. Mariupol is the last major city in the country’s two separatist provinces that is still controlled by Kiev, and rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko announced shortly after the rocket strikes that the insurgents were launching an offensive aimed at taking it. On Friday, he had ruled out peace talks and vowed to advance to the western border of the Donetsk region, a major industrial hub where rebels already control swathes of territory. “Now we have a very interesting marker coming up,” said Paul Quinn-Judge of the International Crisis Group think tank in Brussels. “Will the Russians rein them in?

US condemns new separatist attack in Ukraine’s Mariupol, points finger at Russia | Fox News

Security measures in the city have been strengthened,” the council said in a statement, adding that no armed separatist units had been seen moving toward the city. Clashes were also taking place across the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, where a separatist insurgency emerged in April. Fighting has also been intensifying recently for the government-held town of Debaltseve, 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of Donetsk. Main roads into the town are under separatist control and it’s feared the Ukrainian forces stationed there could soon be fully surrounded. Responding to the attack upon Mariupol, EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini urged Russia to use its influence over the separatist leaders to halt their offensive and to desist from providing military and financial support. Russia insists it does not support the rebels, but Western military officials say the sheer number of heavy weapons under rebel control belies that claim.

Iraq’s Displaced Yazidis Hunker Down As Northern Winter Bites – Yahoo News

Most of the 500,000 displaced people in Dohuk live in tent camps or are scattered in hotels, flats, schools and unfinished buildings, depending on what they can afford. View gallery Iraqi Yazidi children who fled Islamic State (IS) jihadists in the northern town of Sinjar play in t When the Yazidis fled up Mount Sinjar to escape IS in August, they suffered through blistering heat that often reached 50 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) in a dramatic siege that captured world attention. Temperatures now drop below freezing. The few hundred families still on the mountain live in rudimentary camps, filled mostly with women and children, because the men are fighting alongside Kurdish security forces against IS a few miles away. “Life is very hard here. When the winter started, we had nothing to wear, and very basic food,” said Hassan Hisn Semmo, sheltering from pouring rain under a tent where young men are busy making tea for a funeral gathering.

Netanyahu says ‘incitement’ behind Palestinian’s rush-hour knife attack – Yahoo News

The stabbings recalled a string of violent attacks in October and November that were mainly centered in Jerusalem but also included the fatal Nov. 10 knifing of a soldier at a Tel Aviv train station. Those attacks ratcheted up criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from rival politicians, undermining a reputation for being tough on terrorism that had already been damaged by last summer’s Gaza war. Any upsurge in violence is likely to impact Israels March 17 election, analysts said. Though violence usually strengthens parties advocating a hard line toward the Palestinians, it could also threaten Mr. Netanyahu. Recommended: Israelis and Palestinians: A tense coexistence It weakens the prime ministers credibility, says Anshel Pfeffer, a columnist for the Haaretz newspaper. The first duty of the prime minister is to provide security. A Hamas leader, Izzat al-Risheq, a member of the militant organizations political bureau, praised the attack as heroic but did not take responsibility.
